If you’re keen to get the skis out or try your hand at wakeboarding, the nearby lakes are where you want to be. Lake Boga and Lake Charm both offer calm, open waters that are ideal for water sports – much better conditions than the river for skiing and boarding.
Lake Boga is about 50 minutes from Barham and is known as the aquatic playground of Northern Victoria. The lake covers over 800 hectares of unobstructed water, making it perfect for water skiing, wakeboarding, jet skiing and boating.
There are four boat ramps around the lake, designated areas for different activities, and a ski boat club for those who want to get serious. The calm waters suit everyone from beginners learning for the first time through to experienced skiers. While you’re there, it’s worth checking out the Lake Boga Flying Boat Museum – the town has a fascinating WWII history as a secret Catalina flying boat repair depot. The silo art is also worth a look.
Lake Charm is about 40 minutes from Barham, just north of Kerang. It’s another popular spot for water skiing, wakeboarding and boating, with boat ramps and good facilities.
The lake attracts water sports enthusiasts from across the region and offers a quieter alternative to Lake Boga during peak times.
The Murray River at Barham is fantastic for swimming, fishing, kayaking and relaxed boating, but it’s not ideal for water skiing. The river’s currents, snags and boat traffic make the lakes a much better option for high-speed water sports.
If you’re bringing your own boat, both lakes have well-maintained boat ramps. Check local regulations for speed limits and designated skiing zones. Summer weekends can get busy, so early mornings often offer the best conditions.
